The
philosophy of Friends of Portuguese Studies at Rhode Island
College, the Portuguese Studies program of the Department of
Modern Languages, and the Institute for Portuguese and
Lusophone World Studies, the David E. Sweet Center for
Public Policy, addresses the necessity to study and support
all aspects of the Lusophone World and Diaspora in as
inclusive a manner as possible, recognizing and respecting
its rich diversity both collectively and in its parts.
Because of the ancient and global influence of the
Portuguese throughout the world, all of the
Portuguese-speaking countries/areas of the world—i.e.,
Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau,
Mozambique,
São Tomé and
Príncipe, Macao, former Portuguese India (Damão,
Diu,
and
Goa),
and Portugal (including the archipelagos of the Azores and
Madeira)—are studied in terms of their interrelationships
with each other & their relationships with the world at
large.
